- Valuable items. Take jewelry, high-value items, currency, documents, and pets in your vehicle.
- Pack a suitcase for all your essentials. This includes medications, toiletries, some clothes, and anything you might need on a daily basis.
- Give yourself plenty of time. When you start packing is when you realize the number of things you have to pack. So give yourself enough time and start 2-3 weeks in advance of your move.
Packing for your Move:
Prepare your packing supplies (boxes, bubble wrap, padding, tape & scissors, newspaper/ packing paper, blankets, dolly, marker/labels).
Pack your belongings room by room to make unpacking easier; start with the room you use least often.
Label each box with the designated room and a brief description of the contents.
Use sealable plastic bags to keep smaller parts safe, especially if you have loose screws from furniture items you have disassembled.
Don’t overcrowd boxes and don’t mix incompatible items like books and glasses.
Make sure the boxes are sturdier (not flimsy, worn-out cardboard boxes); and pack the heavier items on the bottom. Consider packing with reusable plastic boxes.
Try not to pack boxes heavier than 50lbs.
Fragile items should be wrapped with packing paper or bubble wrap.
Don’t pack paints, corrosive items, or any flammables; properly dispose of items that could cause fire or damage.
When packing computers, use a strong box if you no longer have the original cartons and wrap well with bubble wrap, packing paper and/or towels & blankets to keep them well protected.
Remember to set aside a box or suitcase of your daily essentials (medication, toothbrush, toiletries, etc.) for use throughout the packing process.
